Tamil Nadu CM Thanks Parties For Unanimous Support To Tamil Thai Vazhthu Resolution

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday thanked all political parties for unanimously supporting a special resolution mandating that Tamil Thai Vazhthu be sung first at official functions. The resolution was passed in the state Assembly with support from members across party lines.

The resolution moved by Vijay seeks to formally establish Tamil Thai Vazhthu as the first song to be rendered at programmes organised by government departments, educational institutions, universities, public sector undertakings and other state-run or government-linked organisations. The measure aims to ensure the State song receives the designated position at official events.

After the resolution was adopted, Vijay posted on X thanking political parties for their unanimous support. He described the decision as a historic tribute to Tamil language and identity, emphasising the cultural significance of Tamil and the government’s commitment to preserving its distinct character, heritage and traditions.

Vijay also maintained that the unanimous backing demonstrated that political differences could be set aside on matters concerning Tamil Nadu’s linguistic and cultural identity. He described the resolution as a tribute to Tamil Thai and noted that its passage would remain an important moment in the state’s history.

Tamil Thai Vazhthu is drawn from Manonmaniam, a work written by Manonmaniam Sundaranar, and has traditionally been rendered at official functions in Tamil Nadu. The practice dates back to a government order issued in 1970, while the song was formally recognised as the State song in 2021.

The resolution comes amid a political debate in Tamil Nadu over the order in which Tamil Thai Vazhthu and other patriotic songs should be rendered at official programmes. By mandating Tamil Thai Vazhthu as the opening song at specified government and educational functions, the state government has sought to provide a formal framework for its observance.
