Students Rise Up: Mass Protest Demands Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants!

Students in Manipur protest illegal immigration and demand urgent action to restore peace.

Scores of students staged a sit-in protest at Keisamthong in Imphal West district on Monday, August 18, to demand urgent action against large-scale illegal immigration in Northeastern states.

Organized by the All Manipur Students Union under the North East Students Organisation (NESO), the demonstrators displayed placards calling for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, resettlement of internally displaced persons, and the formation of a review committee to address abnormal population growth.

NESO submitted a memorandum to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, pressing for the immediate detection and deportation of illegal immigrants, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border, and enhanced border control measures.

The organization also urged the central and state governments to resolve the ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023, emphasizing the need for holistic peace in the state.

The protest underscores growing concerns over illegal immigration and its impact on Manipur’s socio-political landscape, with NESO advocating for robust policy interventions to restore stability.
