Second Assam Flood Wave Claims Lives, Thousands Affected

Second flood wave hits Assam, killing two, displacing 22,000.

A second wave of devastating floods has swept through Assam, triggered by relentless torrential rains over the past three days, claiming two lives in Golaghat district and affecting over 22,000 residents across the state. This fresh deluge, following the first wave that battered the region from late May through June, has plunged communities into chaos as rivers breach danger levels, submerging villages and disrupting lives.

The Brahmaputra’s tributaries—Dikhou, Disang, and Dhansiri—have swollen beyond their banks, with Golaghat bearing the brunt of the flooding. In southern Assam, the Barak and Kushiyara rivers are also overflowing, threatening further havoc. A significant contributor to the crisis in Golaghat has been the abrupt release of water from the Doyang Hydro Electric Project by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO), causing a rapid surge in the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers that has inundated vast areas.

Golaghat district, described as grappling with a “heavy flow of floodwater,” is among the hardest hit, with five revenue circles—Golaghat, Khumtai, Morongi, Sarupathar, and Bokakhat—reporting severe impacts across 56 villages. The floods have directly affected 4,548 people, forcing many to flee their homes. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed, evacuating 381 individuals and 28 livestock in daring rescue operations, but the scale of the crisis continues to challenge responders.

To support the displaced, 15 relief camps have been established, offering shelter and aid. Yet, authorities acknowledge that these efforts are struggling to keep pace with the crisis, as floodwaters show no signs of receding. The two fatalities reported in Golaghat within the last 24 hours underscore the deadly toll of this monsoon season’s second onslaught, raising urgent calls for enhanced relief measures and infrastructure to mitigate future floods.

As Assam battles this latest natural disaster, the state’s resilience is tested, with communities and responders rallying to protect lives and livelihoods against the relentless force of nature.
