SC Grants Omar Abdullah Divorce, Ends Long-Running Dispute With Estranged Wife Payal

The Supreme Court on Friday granted a divorce to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after being informed that all matrimonial disputes between him and his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah, had been amicably resolved through mediation. The order marks the end of a prolonged legal battle that had remained pending before the country's highest court, with both parties agreeing to settle their differences outside continued litigation.

A bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe disposed of Omar Abdullah's appeal after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on his behalf, informed the court that the mediation process had resulted in a comprehensive settlement. According to reports, Sibal told the bench that all issues between the parties had been resolved and that there was no longer any dispute requiring adjudication by the court. He further submitted that both sides had agreed to withdraw all related legal proceedings as part of the settlement reached through mediation.

"Both of them have embraced freedom. It's all settled. Lordships may grant divorce. All other matters will be withdrawn," Sibal reportedly told the bench during the hearing. In response, the judges welcomed the development, observing, "That's good. We will dispose it of on those terms." The bench subsequently passed its order, formally bringing the matrimonial proceedings to a close. The court did not publicly disclose the terms of the settlement, indicating only that the parties had amicably resolved all outstanding issues.

The case had been before the Supreme Court for some time after Omar Abdullah challenged earlier proceedings related to the matrimonial dispute. In April last year, the apex court had encouraged both Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah to attempt reconciliation through mediation instead of continuing with adversarial litigation. The bench had directed the estranged couple to sit together and make a genuine effort to resolve their differences, highlighting the judiciary's preference for amicable settlements in family disputes wherever possible. The mediation process ultimately proved successful, allowing the parties to reach a mutually acceptable resolution without further courtroom proceedings.

Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah were married in September 1994 and had been living separately for a long period before the legal proceedings reached their conclusion. Although the couple's separation had been in the public domain for several years, the legal dispute remained unresolved until the mediation process facilitated a settlement. Neither party has publicly commented on the specific terms of the agreement, and the court proceedings focused solely on confirming that all pending disputes had been resolved to the satisfaction of both sides.

The Supreme Court's order brings finality to a personal legal matter involving one of India's prominent political leaders. Omar Abdullah, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has remained active in public life throughout the litigation. The resolution through mediation also reflects the judiciary's continued emphasis on encouraging negotiated settlements in matrimonial disputes where both parties are willing to participate. With the divorce now formally granted and all connected cases set to be withdrawn, the long-running legal battle between Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah has come to an end, closing a chapter that had attracted public attention because of Abdullah's political stature while remaining, at its core, a private matrimonial dispute resolved through the legal process.
