Residents Seek Urgent Repair of NH-37 Highway in Assam Citing Safety Risks
Assam locals demand immediate repair of dangerous NH-37 highway.
Public frustration has intensified in Assam’s Sribhumi district over the deteriorating condition of National Highway 37, with residents demanding urgent repairs to what they describe as a dangerously damaged and accident-prone stretch. The highway, a key international trade route linking Karimganj to the Bangladesh border, has reportedly fallen into severe disrepair, triggering widespread concern among daily commuters and transport operators.
Locals have accused the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited of negligence, alleging that the 14-kilometre stretch between Sribhumi and Sutarkandi has become riddled with potholes and waterlogged sections. Residents say the road has deteriorated to such an extent that it now resembles a series of uneven, disconnected patches, making travel increasingly hazardous.
According to commuters, the poor condition of the highway has turned routine travel into a high-risk activity, with multiple accidents reported almost daily. Students, office-goers, and commercial vehicle drivers are among those most affected, as the road continues to serve as a critical artery for movement of goods and people in the region. Despite repeated complaints and local protests, residents allege that authorities have not taken meaningful corrective action so far.

Frustrated with the lack of response, locals have appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and direct immediate restoration work on the damaged highway. They argue that the road is not only essential for local connectivity but also vital for international trade flowing through the region, making its upkeep a matter of economic importance.
Speaking to reporters, local resident Prithviraj Paul said the highway has become unusable over the past year and described it as the lifeline of Sribhumi district now reduced to a “disaster.” He urged the state leadership to act swiftly to restore normalcy and ease daily hardships faced by residents and traders alike.
Another resident, Subhajit Paul, echoed similar concerns, stating that frequent accidents have made the route unsafe for regular travel. He added that repeated protests and memorandums submitted to the authorities, including meetings with local officials, have not yielded any response, while the condition of the highway continues to worsen.
