Rampur Car Fire Case: Husband Arrested For Murder of UP Police Constable Lata, Child in February Incident

UP Police constable Lata and her son were murdered by her husband, who staged the car fire to claim Rs 2.5 crore compensation.

A chilling murder case in West Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur has revealed that the deaths of a Uttar Pradesh Police constable and her two-year-old son, initially believed to be a tragic road accident, were in fact a pre-planned killing staged to look like a vehicular fire incident.

The incident took place on February 25, when Constable Lata (25) and her son were found dead after their car caught fire on a highway stretch. Her husband, Daan Singh (35), and brother-in-law Ravi Singh (25) survived the incident and initially claimed that a dumper truck had hit their CNG vehicle, causing it to burst into flames. However, inconsistencies in their statements and the absence of any burn injuries on the husband raised suspicion among investigators.

Police officials noted that Daan Singh appeared unharmed despite being inside a burning vehicle, which contradicted the expected injuries in such a scenario. His lack of injuries and behaviour at the scene led investigators to question his account of events. Over time, these doubts deepened and prompted a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire and the deaths of Lata and her child.

Two months after the incident, police arrested Daan Singh along with three alleged accomplices, including Ravi Singh, Noor Hasan, Salman, and Pradeep, in connection with the case. According to investigators, the motive behind the crime was financial gain, specifically the insurance and departmental compensation linked to Lata’s death, which was estimated to be around Rs 2.5 to 3 crore. Police also revealed that Daan Singh had previously lost his first wife in a similar road accident, a case that is now under renewed scrutiny.

The investigation suggests that the murder was meticulously planned in advance. Police allege that the accused took Lata and her child on a planned trip under the guise of a family holiday, travelling through Mathura, Delhi, and Nainital. On their return journey, they allegedly administered sedatives to Lata and the child at a roadside eatery, causing them to lose consciousness before proceeding with the fatal plan.

Authorities further claim that on the night of February 25, the accused stopped the vehicle in Rampur, doused it with petrol, and set it on fire. However, Lata reportedly regained partial consciousness as the flames engulfed the car and attempted to escape before being forced back inside. The case, now being investigated as a calculated murder conspiracy, has shocked law enforcement officials and raised serious concerns over insurance-linked crimes and domestic deception.
