Rain, Thunderstorms to Cool Delhi; IMD Issues Yellow Alert
IMD issues a yellow alert for Delhi; rain and thunderstorms are expected Thursday with a cooling effect.
Residents of the national capital are likely to receive relief from the intense summer heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, strong winds, and light rainfall across the city over the next few days. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Thursday and an orange alert for Friday, warning of changing weather conditions accompanied by gusty winds and a significant drop in temperature.
According to the IMD, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday at the Safdarjung weather station, which serves as the city’s primary weather observatory. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to settle around 43 degrees Celsius, though weather conditions are forecast to improve by Friday. Officials said cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall are expected to bring down daytime temperatures considerably after several days of severe heat.
The IMD stated that Thursday’s weather is likely to remain partly cloudy before turning generally cloudy later in the day. A spell of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 70 kmph, has been predicted during the evening and night. Sustained surface winds of 20-30 kmph are also expected during the daytime across several parts of the city.

For Friday, the weather department has issued an orange alert as temperatures are likely to drop sharply to between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies along with very light to light rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds ranging between 60 and 70 km/h, with gusts potentially touching 80 km/h during the morning hours. Officials said the changing weather pattern is linked to western disturbances and moisture incursion over north India.
The maximum temperature is expected to dip further on Saturday and remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures could fall to 22-24 degrees Celsius. However, the IMD has indicated that temperatures may gradually rise again after the weekend, with maximum temperatures expected to touch 39-41 degrees Celsius by June 3. Yellow alerts for rainfall have also been issued for Sunday and Monday, suggesting continued unsettled weather conditions in the region.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the “moderate” category on Thursday morning. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 199 at 9 am, according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Under CPCB classifications, AQI values between 101 and 200 fall under the “moderate” category, while levels above 200 are considered “poor.” Authorities are continuing to monitor pollution and weather conditions closely as changing wind patterns and rainfall are expected to improve air quality temporarily.
