Rahul Gandhi Invokes Congress Legacy as INDIA Allies Face Challenges

Congress highlights its historical roots amid opposition alliance challenges.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has invoked the Congress party's role in India's freedom movement to underline its position as a force of resistance against the BJP and the RSS. His remarks come at a politically significant moment, with two key INDIA bloc allies — the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) — facing internal challenges, while the BJP continues to consolidate its position ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Addressing INDIA bloc partners earlier this month, Gandhi described the Congress as a "party of resistance" that emerged during the colonial era when modern India did not yet exist. He argued that unlike many contemporary political parties, Congress was not built with the support of state institutions but evolved as a movement committed to protecting equality and democratic values. He also reiterated the party's ideological opposition to the RSS and BJP, stressing that Congress would never compromise with either organisation.

Gandhi drew a historical parallel with the transformation of Congress during the freedom struggle, arguing that the organisation changed fundamentally when it adopted the goal of complete independence under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. According to him, the party ceased to be merely a political organisation and became a resistance movement dedicated to challenging colonial rule. The comparison was intended to emphasise Congress's historical legacy and its current role in opposing what it views as threats to democratic institutions.

However, political observers note that the Congress of the 1920s differed significantly from the party that exists today. While it functioned as a resistance movement against British rule, it also operated as a broad umbrella organisation that accommodated diverse ideological streams, social groups and regional interests. The Congress of that era included liberals, conservatives, socialists, industrialists, farmers and regional leaders, making it one of the most inclusive political platforms in the country.

This ideological diversity allowed the party to build a mass national movement capable of representing varied sections of Indian society. Analysts argue that the Congress's strength during the independence struggle came not only from its resistance credentials but also from its ability to accommodate differing viewpoints within a common political framework. Over time, changes in India's political landscape and the rise of regional parties have altered that role, making it more difficult for Congress to function as the expansive umbrella organisation it once was.

The debate over Congress's identity comes at a time when opposition parties are attempting to maintain unity against the BJP ahead of crucial parliamentary and electoral battles. Gandhi's remarks highlight the party's effort to reconnect with its historical roots and present itself as the principal challenger to the ruling establishment. At the same time, discussions about the Congress's past also raise broader questions about whether the party can once again build the broad-based coalition of ideas and interests that defined its role during India's freedom movement and the decades that followed.
