Punjab CM Raises Alarm Over Fuel, DAP Supply Ahead Of 140 LMT Wheat Harvest

Punjab CM highlights fuel and DAP concerns ahead of wheat harvest.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has raised concerns over rising fuel prices and the availability of DAP (di-ammonium phosphate) fertiliser as the state prepares for its upcoming wheat harvest, projected at 140 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). The announcement comes amid efforts to ensure smooth procurement and timely cultivation for one of India’s most crucial agricultural seasons.

Speaking to officials, Mann highlighted that the escalating cost of diesel and other fuels could impact the operational efficiency of farm machinery, including tractors and harvesters, potentially affecting sowing and harvesting schedules. He also underlined the critical need for sufficient DAP fertiliser, a key input for wheat productivity, warning that delays or shortages could reduce crop yields.

Punjab’s wheat harvest is a vital component of India’s food security strategy, as the state consistently contributes a substantial share of the nation’s total output. Officials said that the projected 140 LMT figure reflects ongoing efforts to maintain high productivity levels, but logistical and supply challenges could pose risks if not addressed promptly.

The Chief Minister instructed relevant departments to ensure adequate fuel and fertiliser distribution before peak harvest operations begin. Measures include coordinated delivery schedules, monitoring of stock levels, and price stabilization mechanisms to support farmers and prevent supply bottlenecks.

Agricultural experts note that timely access to inputs like DAP and fuel is critical not only for yield optimisation but also for maintaining the quality of the wheat crop. Any disruption at this stage could have downstream effects on milling, storage, and national grain reserves.

As Punjab gears up for the harvest, authorities are emphasising proactive planning and support measures to safeguard farmers’ interests. Mann’s intervention reflects the state government’s commitment to addressing operational challenges and ensuring that the wheat season progresses smoothly, contributing to India’s overall food security.
