Police Detain 110 After Violence Over Alleged Encroachment at Jaipur’s Kalandari Mosque

Stone-pelting during an encroachment removal drive at a Jaipur mosque injured policemen, prompting the detention of over 100 people.

Violence erupted in Jaipur's Chomu area on Friday, December 26, 2025, when a police operation to remove alleged illegal encroachments at the Kalandari Mosque turned into clashes, resulting in stone-pelting that injured several policemen. The dispute, which has been simmering for some time, intensified when a group allegedly attempted to reinstall railings at a site that had previously been voluntarily cleared by one of the parties involved. According to police officials, miscreants targeted the force during the encroachment removal drive, prompting a swift response to bring the situation under control.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Jaipur, Hanuman Prasad Meena, confirmed that as many as 110 individuals were detained for rioting and attempting to flare communal tensions. He stated that the police identified and took into custody the rioters from their homes, describing those involved as habitual troublemakers. Jaipur Special Police Commissioner Rahul Prakash added that the area witnessed heavy deployment of forces late on Friday, along with the suspension of internet services to prevent further mobilization. Prakash emphasized that the situation was brought under control, with those appearing suspicious or attempting protests also rounded up, and assured that fugitives would be arrested soon.

Rajasthan Minister Jawahar Singh Bedam addressed the incident, calling the violence regrettable while defending the police action. He explained that the encroachments along the Jaipur-Sikar road had been contributing to increased road accidents and posed risks to public safety. The authorities initiated removal after discussions and mutual understanding, successfully clearing the illegal structures. Bedam alleged that a conspiracy was behind the subsequent trouble, including the attempt to reinstall railings, and praised the police for preventing escalation, arresting the culprits, and maintaining law and order with barricades in place.

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges of resolving long-standing encroachment disputes at religious sites, especially when they involve public safety concerns such as road obstructions. Police have urged calm and assured that strict action will continue against those disturbing peace. As investigations proceed, authorities are monitoring the area closely to ensure the situation remains stable and no further violence occurs.
