PM Modi Urges Water Conservation, Calls Every Saved Drop An Asset For Future Generations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to actively participate in water conservation efforts, saying that every drop of water saved today will become a valuable asset for future generations. Addressing the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi praised public participation in the Jal Shakti Ministry's 'Catch the Rain' campaign and called for continued efforts towards rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and revival of traditional water sources. During his address, Modi recalled that in the previous episode of Mann Ki Baat, he had highlighted the importance of the 'Catch the Rain' initiative and appealed to people to transform it into a mass movement. He said the campaign, which has been underway since July 4, has received encouraging participation from villages, cities, panchayats and social organisations across the country.

"The message of 'Catch The Rain' is very simple: conserve the water right where and when the rain falls," Modi said. He explained that the initiative focuses on strengthening rainwater harvesting systems, improving groundwater levels, restoring old water bodies and promoting tree plantation activities. The prime minister expressed satisfaction over the involvement of communities in implementing these measures at the local level. Highlighting examples of water conservation efforts across different states, Modi said several regions have taken innovative steps to protect and store water resources. He mentioned that in some areas, people are removing silt from old ponds to improve their capacity, while in others, abandoned wells and stepwells are being restored. He also noted that unused borewells are being converted into channels for groundwater recharge.

The prime minister highlighted initiatives undertaken in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha as examples of successful community participation. He said around 1,500 ponds have been constructed in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district, while 'Amrit Sarovars' have been restored in Narsinghpur. He also pointed to significant water storage improvements in Nashik, Maharashtra, as part of ongoing conservation efforts. Modi further said that gram panchayats in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, have actively participated in the campaign by reviving old ponds and making them functional again. He added that urban areas are also contributing to the initiative, citing positive results from cities such as Korba in Chhattisgarh, Bhubaneswar in Odisha and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh.

The prime minister encouraged citizens to take responsibility for nearby ponds, wells and stepwells and contribute towards protecting water resources. He said conservation efforts at the individual and community level can collectively make a significant difference in addressing future water challenges. "Every drop saved today serves as the greatest asset for future generations," Modi said, emphasising that water conservation should become a shared responsibility rather than only a government initiative. He urged people to continue supporting efforts that improve water availability and strengthen environmental sustainability.

The focus on water conservation comes amid growing concerns over groundwater depletion, changing rainfall patterns and increasing demand for water resources across the country. Through initiatives such as 'Catch the Rain', the government has been encouraging local communities to adopt sustainable practices and improve water management systems. Modi's remarks in Mann Ki Baat highlighted the importance of public participation in addressing environmental challenges. By encouraging citizens to conserve rainwater and revive traditional water systems, the prime minister stressed the need for collective action to secure water resources for future generations.
