PM Modi Shares Muharram Message On Imam Hussain’s Sacrifice And Values

PM Modi pays tribute to Imam Hussain’s sacrifice on Muharram.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute on the occasion of Muharram, saying that the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire people across the world to uphold truth and justice. In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said Imam Hussain’s legacy remains a powerful reminder of courage, conviction and moral strength in the face of adversity.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is regarded as one of the holiest periods in Islam. It is closely associated with Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), in the Battle of Karbala. Across India and several parts of the world, the period is marked by religious gatherings, prayer meetings and mourning processions.

The month of Muharram holds deep spiritual and historical significance as one of the four sacred months in Islam during which warfare is traditionally prohibited. The term “Muharram” itself means “forbidden”, and it is considered a time for reflection, prayer and increased devotion. Muslims use this period to remember key events in Islamic history and reflect on teachings of faith, sacrifice and justice.

Muharram also marks the beginning of the Islamic or Hijri New Year, which follows a lunar calendar based on the sighting of the new moon. While the new year does not involve specific rituals, it is widely observed as a time of reflection on the life and message of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the early Muslim community.

The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is especially significant for Muslims as it marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions. The event is remembered as a symbol of resistance against oppression and unwavering commitment to justice, with commemorations taking place in various forms across different communities.

Muharram observances differ among Muslim traditions. Shia Muslims observe the first 10 days with mourning rituals, including attending majlis, wearing black attire and participating in processions on Ashura, while Sunni Muslims often observe voluntary fasting on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th of Muharram, following religious traditions associated with the Prophet’s teachings. The period remains one of deep religious significance, uniting communities in remembrance, reflection and devotion.
