Pakistan Erupts in Violence as TLP Clashes With Police Over Gaza Ceasefire
Islamist mob torches streets as Palestinians celebrate peace.
Violent clashes between supporters of Pakistan's radical Islamist party, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), and police in Lahore have left at least five dead, including one police officer, with dozens injured. The unrest erupted during a pro-Palestinian march toward Islamabad, aimed at staging a rally outside the US Embassy. The TLP, known for its disruptive demonstrations, began its "long march" on Friday, sparking confrontations that paralyzed Lahore and nearby Muridke.
On Monday, violence surged when protesters attempted to clear shipping containers used by police to block roads. Punjab Police Chief Usman Anwar reported that demonstrators opened fire, killing an officer and wounding others. TLP claimed its leader, Saad Rizvi, was critically injured by police gunfire, with videos showing him pleading for a ceasefire amid audible gunfire. The group also reported significant casualties among its supporters, though exact numbers remain unconfirmed. Social media footage captured burning vehicles, including a truck carrying TLP workers.
The TLP’s march, intended to express solidarity with Palestinians following a Gaza ceasefire, has drawn polarized reactions. Some Pakistanis criticized the timing, arguing the focus should be on celebrating peace, while others accused the government of preemptively blocking roads, escalating tensions. Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry questioned TLP’s resort to violence, urging calm.

The TLP, which rose to prominence in 2018 by defending Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law, has a history of staging volatile protests, often targeting perceived insults to Islam, including Quran desecration abroad. This march, part of ongoing pro-Palestinian rallies, underscores the group’s influence and the challenges authorities face in managing such demonstrations.
The US Embassy issued a security alert last week, warning of potential disruptions. Police have arrested over 100 protesters and are searching for TLP leaders hiding in nearby areas, as the nation grapples with the fallout of this deadly unrest.
