Omar Abdullah warns against lawlessness in J&K after Ramban incident and urges strict action.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said he will not allow “jungle raj” in the Union Territory, following the death of a man in Ramban district who allegedly jumped into a river after being chased by cow vigilantes.
Speaking to reporters in Bijbehara in Anantnag district, the Chief Minister said the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir and will not permit any actions that disrupt public order. He added that his administration aims to begin a “new phase” focused on ensuring a peaceful and stable environment across the region.
Abdullah said there are elements who are attempting to create communal tension and disturb harmony in the Union Territory. He asserted that such attempts will be firmly dealt with under his government, emphasising that lawlessness and disorder will not be tolerated.

Referring to the Ramban incident that occurred on Sunday, the Chief Minister urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure strict action against those responsible. He said accountability must be established to send a strong message that vigilantism and violence have no place in the region.
According to police, the incident took place when a man identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan of Pogal was allegedly chased and attacked by a group of men while ferrying cattle in Ramban district. In an attempt to escape, he reportedly jumped into Bisleri Nullah near Makerkoot tunnel number 5 and was swept away by strong currents.
Authorities have registered an FIR in the case and arrested four accused persons. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by a sub-divisional police officer, has also been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Search operations involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local volunteers are currently underway. Officials said the youth had necessary permission to transport cattle, while his chances of survival remain uncertain as efforts to trace him continue.
