Mystery Deepens: Where Is Former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar?
Ex-VP vanishes, sparking fears of confinement
The sudden disappearance of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has ignited widespread concern, prompting Shiv Sena-UBT leader Sanjay Raut to demand answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In a letter dated August 10, 2025, Raut raised alarm over Dhankhar’s whereabouts, citing unsuccessful attempts by Rajya Sabha members to contact him since his abrupt resignation on July 21, 2025, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Dhankhar, 74, who also served as Rajya Sabha chairman, resigned citing health reasons after a contentious tenure marked by clashes with the Opposition, including an unsuccessful impeachment motion. His exit, announced hours after he appeared "normal" during a session, stunned political circles. Raut’s letter, shared on X on August 11, 2025, highlights rumors in Delhi that Dhankhar may be confined to his residence and "not safe," fueling speculation of foul play.
“There has been no communication with him or his staff, which is a matter of grave concern,” Raut wrote, questioning Dhankhar’s location, health, and safety. He noted that some MPs are considering a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court to demand clarity, a step echoed by senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who called Dhankhar a “laapataa [missing] Vice President.”

Shiv Sena-UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray also raised the issue during a press conference on August 7, urging public discussion on Dhankhar’s absence. The lack of updates from Dhankhar’s family or associates has intensified suspicions, with Raut comparing the situation to authoritarian tactics in Russia or China.
As concerns mount, Raut’s appeal to Shah underscores a growing political storm, with calls for transparency about the former Vice President’s fate. The nation awaits answers amid fears for Dhankhar’s well-being.
