Mumbai Monorail Mess: 2 Officials Suspended!

2 officials suspended after Monorail mishap left 700 stranded.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) suspended two senior officials, Manish Soni, Chief Engineer (Signal & Telecom), and Rajiv Gite, Manager (Security), following a chaotic incident on August 19, where heavy rains left two Monorail trains stranded in Mumbai. The suspensions come after a preliminary review revealed lapses in operational protocols, raising serious concerns about passenger safety.

The incident saw 582 passengers stranded between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park, requiring rescue via snorkel ladders as the train could not be towed. Another 200 passengers were safely evacuated from a second train towed to Wadala station.

In response, the MMRDA has launched a high-level inquiry led by Vikram Kumar, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, alongside Prof. Himanshu Bahirat of IIT Bombay, Geetha Pillai of CIDCO, and Astik Pandey of MMRDA. The committee will thoroughly investigate the incident and recommend measures to enhance the safety and reliability of Monorail operations.

The MMRDA’s swift action, including the suspension and inquiry, underscores its commitment to addressing operational shortcomings. Following the incident, the authority announced immediate and long-term measures to prevent future disruptions, aiming to restore confidence in Mumbai’s Monorail system.
