Mild Earthquake of 3.2 Magnitude Strikes Assam Early Morning

Minor quake rattles Nalbari, Assam, at dawn today.

A 3.2 magnitude earthquake jolted Nalbari, Assam, early Monday morning at 05:54 IST, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor, occurring at a depth of 13 kilometers, had its epicenter at latitude 26.48 N and longitude 91.37 E, striking the heart of Nalbari district. The NCS shared details on X, stating, "EQ of M: 3.2, On: 20/10/2025 05:54:05 IST, Lat: 26.48 N, Long: 91.37 E, Depth: 13 Km, Location: Nalbari, Assam." No immediate reports of damage or injuries have surfaced, but the early morning shake left residents briefly rattled in this northeastern state known for its seismic activity.

This quake follows another minor tremor in Assam just days ago, when a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck Cachar district on Saturday at 03:29 IST. That event, with an epicenter at latitude 24.84 N and longitude 93.20 E, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. The NCS reported no significant impact from the Cachar quake either, reflecting the region’s frequent but often mild seismic events.

Assam lies in a seismically active zone, part of the Himalayan tectonic belt, making it prone to earthquakes. While Monday’s tremor was minor, it serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to larger quakes. Local authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols, such as securing heavy objects and identifying safe spots in homes.

Seismologists note that shallow quakes, like the one in Nalbari, are often felt more intensely but typically cause less damage than deeper ones. The NCS continues to monitor the region closely, providing real-time updates to ensure public safety. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and report any unusual activity to local disaster management teams.

As Assam prepares for Diwali celebrations, the quake has prompted renewed calls for earthquake preparedness, including drills and awareness campaigns to ensure communities are ready for unexpected seismic events.
