Masked Suspect Seen Surveying Brown Campus Hours Before Deadly Shooting

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released an enhanced video timeline and clearer images depicting a masked individual suspected of reconnaissance activities around Brown University's campus hours before the deadly shooting on December 13, 2025, that claimed two lives and injured nine others.
The surveillance footage captures the stocky suspect, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and dressed in dark clothing, walking along sidewalks in Providence's East Side neighbourhood starting shortly after 2 p.m. on the day of the attack. The paths shown are within blocks of the Barus and Holley engineering building, where the gunman later entered an unlocked facility and opened fire with a 9mm handgun during a classroom session.
Authorities have renewed the search after releasing a previously detained person of interest, emphasising that the new video provides critical insights into the suspect's movements both before and immediately after the incident. The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the perpetrator, urging tips through dedicated hotlines or online portals.

Investigators have received approximately 200 public tips and continue to canvass residential areas, examining security cameras and searching for additional evidence. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has described the probe as progressing effectively while cautioning against speculative links to motive, stressing the need for patience in apprehending the armed and dangerous individual.
The attack has prompted significant scrutiny of campus security protocols, including the absence of comprehensive camera coverage and unlocked building entrances during exam periods. Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League institution with nearly 11,000 students, has since implemented heightened measures such as doubled public safety staffing and restricted access to facilities to enhance protection amid the community's ongoing trauma.
