Manish Tewari Reacts After Being Left Out Of Congress' Punjab Organisational Team

Tewari posts cryptic message after Punjab Congress team exclusion.

Senior Congress leader and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari on Thursday expressed disappointment after being left out of the party's newly announced core team for Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Reacting to the omission, Tewari posted a cryptic message on social media, suggesting that competence can sometimes become a liability while reaffirming his decades-long commitment to the Congress.

In his post, Tewari wrote, "Being skilled is itself a big flaw... I wish I had a way to cure people's insecurities!" He followed it with another message stating that the Congress had given him much over the past 45 years and that he had dedicated his life to serving the party. Referring to destiny, he added, "Who can avoid destiny... Whatever has to happen, will happen."

Congress sources, however, maintained that Tewari's exclusion from the Punjab team was due to his current role as the Member of Parliament from Chandigarh, which is a Union Territory and not part of Punjab. Tewari has previously represented the Punjab constituencies of Ludhiana and Anandpur Sahib in the Lok Sabha and has remained a prominent face of the party in the state for several years.

The development comes a day after the Congress unveiled its revamped organisational structure for Punjab in preparation for next year's Assembly elections. The party retained Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and Pratap Singh Bajwa as Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. It also appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as chairman of the Campaign Committee, Vijay Inder Singla to head the Election Management and Coordination Committee, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa as chairman of the Core Committee, and Amar Singh to lead the Manifesto Committee.

Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Raj Kumar Verka and Sangat Singh Gilzian were named working presidents. According to party sources, Tewari is not the only senior leader unhappy with the latest appointments. Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is also reportedly dissatisfied with the decision to continue Raja Warring as the state Congress chief. The organisational reshuffle reflects the party's efforts to strengthen its election machinery, even as signs of internal discontent emerge ahead of a crucial electoral contest.

Tewari has previously been among the Congress leaders who publicly sought organisational reforms within the party. In 2020, he was one of the 23 senior leaders, popularly known as the "G-23", who wrote to then Congress president Sonia Gandhi urging sweeping structural changes and greater internal accountability. His latest remarks are likely to fuel speculation over dissatisfaction within sections of the party as it prepares for the Punjab Assembly elections.
