Fake mechanic attempts rape at university quarters
A man posing as an LPG cylinder mechanic was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape the wife of an assistant professor at Fakir Mohan University in Balasore, Odisha, police said on Sunday. The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon at the professor’s campus quarters, has heightened tensions across the university community.
The accused, Shankar Patra from Nilgiri, Balasore, gained entry by offering a routine LPG cylinder check. Once inside, he allegedly locked the door and attempted to assault the woman, according to her husband’s complaint filed with Remuna police station. The woman escaped, locking herself in another room, and alerted her husband while screaming for help. Campus security personnel swiftly intervened, overpowering Patra and handing him over to the police.
The incident has sparked outrage on the Fakir Mohan University campus, home to staff quarters and women’s hostels, raising concerns about safety. Police have launched an investigation, and Patra faces charges related to attempted rape and trespassing.
