Malaysia-based Vinosha Ravi Speaks Out After Being Mistaken For Tamil Nadu Minister Keerthana

Vinosha Ravi, a Malaysia-based woman who was mistakenly identified on social media as Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S Keerthana, has spoken about the online abuse and threats she faced after a personal video went viral. The video showed Ravi going about her daily life while wearing a short black dress. Social media users allegedly shared the footage while questioning whether the woman was the Tamil Nadu minister.

Keerthana later clarified that the woman in the video was not her and apologised to Ravi for the controversy caused by their resemblance. The minister also criticised the focus on women's clothing, arguing that judging a woman based on what she wears reflects a regressive mindset. Her clarification, however, did not stop the online attention directed towards Ravi, who said the situation quickly escalated from something she initially considered a joke into a serious ordeal.

Speaking to NDTV, Ravi recalled receiving the video from a colleague and initially treating it lightly. She said the situation became concerning as the footage spread and comments became abusive and vulgar. Ravi said the experience affected her significantly and left her fearful about going outside, including travelling to work. She also stressed that she had not posted the video herself on any social media platform.

According to Ravi, the footage was recorded by another person and later uploaded online with the false claim that it showed the Tamil Nadu minister. She urged people to exercise greater responsibility before sharing or commenting on content online, particularly when it involves private individuals. She argued that people often focus on gaining views without considering how their posts could affect the person featured in the content.

Ravi has approached Malaysian police after receiving threats and abusive messages online. She said she was cooperating with the authorities and that the police had taken the matter seriously. The incident has also raised concerns over the rapid spread of misidentification on social media, where an unverified claim can quickly lead to widespread scrutiny of someone who has no connection to the original controversy.

Despite the experience, Ravi said she does not intend to change her clothing or lifestyle because of the online abuse. She maintained that people should not be judged based on what they wear and argued that women have the right to decide how they dress. The episode has renewed discussion around online responsibility, privacy and the consequences of spreading unverified claims about individuals.
