Maharashtra To Receive Rain, Thunderstorms; IMD Issues Orange And Yellow Alerts

IMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms across Maharashtra, with Mumbai and Thane likely to see showers midweek.

Several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, are expected to experience a rainy week ahead, with the India Meteorological Department issuing alerts for moderate to heavy rainfall across the state until April 2. The forecast indicates a gradual intensification of rain activity beginning early this week, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in multiple districts.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity will increase from Tuesday onward, with several regions likely to witness thundershowers and lightning. The weather agency has issued both yellow and orange alerts across districts, cautioning residents about potentially hazardous weather conditions, including strong winds and localized heavy rainfall. Light showers have already been predicted in parts of the state starting Monday.

Private weather forecaster Rushikesh Agre noted that cloud formations are building over Pune and the Western Ghats, raising the likelihood of isolated showers. He also indicated that rainfall in Mumbai is expected to pick up by midweek, with intensity gradually increasing across several regions of Maharashtra.

Districts such as Jalgaon, Nashik, Sangli, and Latur are under a yellow alert, with forecasts of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and winds reaching 30–40 kmph. Meanwhile, areas including Ahilyanagar, Beed, and Dharashiv have been placed under an orange alert, indicating a higher likelihood of intense weather events such as heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds up to 60 kmph, and possible hailstorms.

The IMD’s day-wise forecast shows widespread alerts continuing through the week. On March 31, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Mumbai and Thane, while April 1 and 2 are likely to see intermittent showers across coastal districts such as Palghar and Ratnagiri. Most districts, except a few in Vidarbha, will remain under yellow alerts during this period.

Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious, particularly in areas under orange alerts, due to the risk of strong winds, lightning, and waterlogging. The anticipated rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures, but officials have urged preparedness to minimize disruptions caused by the changing weather conditions.
