Lokayukta Forms Special Team To Probe Bengaluru Hospital Wall Collapse Case

Lokayukta forms special team to investigate Bengaluru Bowring Hospital wall collapse that killed seven people.

The Karnataka Lokayukta has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the collapse of a compound wall at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru, which claimed seven lives during heavy rain and a thunderstorm on April 29. The incident, which also injured several others, including a child and tourists from Kerala, has triggered multiple parallel investigations across departments.

Officials said the SIT will hold its first detailed coordination meeting on Tuesday at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Bengaluru. The meeting will focus on planning the investigation, identifying key witnesses, and deciding on the issuance of notices to individuals connected to the hospital administration and construction maintenance. Senior officials are expected to map out the sequence of events that led to the structural failure.

Bowring Hospital Dean Manoj Kumar H. V. is expected to participate in the meeting and provide administrative details related to the hospital premises and maintenance records. Authorities believe his inputs could be crucial in understanding whether lapses in upkeep or negligence contributed to the collapse of the wall near the accident ward gate.

The SIT will be headed by a Superintendent of Police-ranked officer and will also include a district judge and the Chief Engineer from the Lokayukta’s technical wing. The inclusion of technical experts is intended to assess structural integrity issues, material quality, and compliance with safety standards. Lokayukta Justice B. S. Patil has directed the team to complete its probe and submit a report by May 16.

The investigation follows earlier inspections at the site, where engineering teams collected samples of cement, soil, and construction materials for forensic analysis. Officials said the findings will be used to determine whether poor-quality materials or design flaws contributed to the collapse. Separate inquiries are also being conducted by the Deputy Commissioner’s office and technical departments.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Karnataka government has ordered a statewide audit of hospital premises, with a special focus on Bengaluru facilities to ensure structural safety. Lokayukta officials had earlier initiated a suo motu probe after visiting the site, emphasizing accountability and preventive measures. The broader investigation is expected to determine administrative responsibility and recommend corrective action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
