Kuki-Zo Patients Relocated From Imphal Hospital to Churachandpur Amid Mounting Tensions

Three injured men relocated from Imphal hospital amid communal tensions outside RIMS.

Amid continuing tensions and protests in Imphal, three injured Kuki-Zo men receiving treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) were shifted late Tuesday night to a hospital in Churachandpur district, following mounting unrest outside the state’s premier medical facility. The transfer was carried out under tight security after two days of demonstrations at the hospital premises.

According to officials, the three men had sustained gunshot injuries during a suspected exchange of fire between Kuki-Zo and Naga groups in Kangpokpi district on Monday morning. They were initially brought to RIMS in Imphal by security forces for emergency treatment, given the severity of their injuries and the hospital’s status as the state’s top referral medical institution.

However, their presence at RIMS triggered protests over the course of the past two days, with demonstrators gathering outside the hospital and demanding their relocation. The situation led to heightened security deployment around the medical campus as authorities attempted to manage the escalating tensions while ensuring uninterrupted medical care for the patients.

A senior security official confirmed that the three patients were moved during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. An official at Churachandpur Medical College also confirmed their arrival, stating that the injured individuals have now been admitted there for continued treatment. The transfer was conducted under strict security arrangements to avoid further escalation of tensions.

Officials said the decision was taken in view of the volatile situation outside RIMS and the need to maintain law and order while ensuring the patients receive uninterrupted medical attention. The relocation highlights the continuing sensitivity surrounding ethnic tensions in the region, which have frequently impacted public institutions and healthcare facilities.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely in both Imphal and Churachandpur districts, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in managing communal sensitivities alongside essential medical and administrative services in conflict-affected parts of Manipur.
