Kerala Issues Heat Advisory As Temperatures Rise Across Multiple Districts
Kerala issues heatwave advisory warning of high temperatures, UV exposure, and health risks across districts.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a comprehensive heatwave advisory as temperatures continue to rise across the state, warning residents of increased risks of heat-related illnesses and urging strict adherence to safety precautions. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also cautioned that daytime temperatures are expected to climb significantly in the coming days.
According to the Chief Minister, temperatures could reach up to 40°C in Palakkad, around 39°C in Kollam, and remain between 36°C and 37°C in several other districts. He also warned of rising ultraviolet (UV) index levels and advised the public to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 10 am and 3 pm. Vijayan further urged citizens to depend only on official weather updates and avoid misinformation circulating on social media.
The KSDMA, in its advisory, stated that extreme heat conditions could lead to serious health issues such as sunstroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration. It recommended that people stay hydrated by drinking sufficient clean water even when not thirsty and avoid beverages such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks during the daytime, as they may contribute to dehydration.

The authority also issued detailed safety guidelines covering multiple aspects of daily life. It advised wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and using protective gear like umbrellas, hats, and footwear when stepping outdoors. Citizens were encouraged to increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and oral rehydration solutions (ORS). Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, children, persons with disabilities, and those with existing health conditions, were urged to remain indoors during peak heat hours.
In addition to health precautions, the advisory highlighted fire and environmental risks linked to extreme temperatures. It warned that markets, buildings, and waste dumping sites could face a higher risk of fire incidents and called for safety inspections. The KSDMA also flagged an increased likelihood of forest fires and urged residents near forest areas and tourists to remain vigilant and follow Forest Department instructions strictly.
Authorities further directed schools and workplaces to adjust schedules to minimise exposure during peak heat hours, recommending cancellation of outdoor activities such as assemblies. Employers were asked to ensure rest breaks, hydration, and protective measures for outdoor workers, while event organisers were advised to provide shade and drinking water at public gatherings. The advisory also stressed precautions for animals and pets, urging that they not be left in direct sunlight or inside parked vehicles, and called for greater attention to water conservation measures during the heatwave period.
