Karnataka Government Monitors Dharmasthala Social Media
Government monitors posts, vows action in burial case.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Friday that the government is closely monitoring social media posts related to the alleged mass burials in Dharmasthala, warning of strict action against content that could “instigate societal feelings.” The statement comes amid a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into claims of mass murder, rape, and illegal burials between 1995 and 2014, based on allegations by an anonymous former sanitation worker who claimed to have buried bodies, some showing signs of sexual assault.
Parameshwara emphasized the government’s vigilance, citing prior actions against communal posts in Dakshina Kannada. “We will act against hate speech or posts that wrongly impact society,” he told reporters. Meanwhile, SIT chief Pronab Mohanty, Director General of Police (Internal Security Division), met Parameshwara amid speculation about his potential transfer to a central government role.
The minister clarified the meeting focused on Mohanty’s empanelment for a union position and upcoming regulations on fake news and online gambling, not the Dharmasthala investigation.
No official request has been received to relieve Mohanty, Parameshwara noted, adding that any decision would be made by the state government. The SIT continues its probe, with heightened scrutiny on social media to prevent misinformation as the case unfolds.
