Apple names longtime executive John Ternus as CEO, succeeding Tim Cook.
John Ternus has been named the next Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc., succeeding Tim Cook in a major leadership transition announced on April 20. The change will take effect on September 1, 2026, marking the end of Cook’s nearly 15-year tenure at the helm of the iPhone maker.
Ternus, currently Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is a long-time company insider who joined the firm in 2001. Over more than two decades, he has played a central role in developing some of Apple’s most important products, including the iPad, Mac lineup, and AirPods, establishing himself as a key figure in the company’s hardware strategy.
Widely regarded as an engineering-focused leader, Ternus is expected to bring a product-driven approach to Apple’s next phase. His appointment signals continuity in Apple’s leadership style, but also comes at a time when the company faces increasing pressure to accelerate innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence, where rivals have moved ahead aggressively.
