Iranian Drone Attack Injures Two at Azerbaijan Airport
Iranian drone hits Azerbaijan airport, injuring two passengers or staff.
At least two people were injured when drones launched from Iranian territory struck Nakhchivan International Airport and nearby areas in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan on Thursday, according to official statements from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The attacks mark a significant spillover in tensions linked to the broader Middle East conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Azerbaijani authorities said one of the drones hit the airport’s passenger terminal, causing structural damage and prompting emergency response units to rush to the scene. Another drone reportedly fell near a village school in Shakarabad, further raising alarm among local residents. Officials condemned the strikes as violations of international law and a dangerous escalation in the region.
In response to the incident, Azerbaijan summoned the Iranian ambassador in Baku and lodged an official diplomatic protest, demanding clarification from Tehran and assurances that such attacks will not recur. The Azerbaijani statement also underscored the country’s right to take appropriate measures to safeguard its citizens and territory.

Nakhchivan is an Azerbaijani exclave separated from mainland Azerbaijan and bordered by Iran, Türkiye, and Armenia, making it strategically sensitive. The cross‑border drone strikes — which occurred in close proximity to the Iran–Azerbaijan border — underscore the risks of regional instability spreading beyond the core theatres of conflict.
The video footage published by Euronews shows drones approaching the airport and plumes of smoke rising after impact, illustrating the intensity of the strike and the potential peril for civilians and infrastructure in the area. Authorities have not yet released a full casualty list beyond the reported injuries.
The development comes amid heightened military activity in the Middle East, where Iran has conducted drone and missile operations in response to ongoing offensive actions by U.S. and Israeli forces. The incident in Azerbaijan may further complicate diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict and prevent broader regional escalation.
