Three Trinamool rebels maintain ties with Suvendu Adhikari amid political uncertainty.
The political situation surrounding 20 Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs who broke away from the party and joined the lesser-known NCPI has taken a new turn, with three Muslim MPs staying away from NDA meetings despite attending a lunch hosted by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The developments have raised questions about their future political alignment and the status of their proposed merger.
The three MPs — Abu Taher Khan, Khalilur Rahman and Yusuf Pathan — have skipped the NDA’s ‘Mangal Milan’ meetings for two consecutive Tuesdays. However, all 20 rebel MPs attended a lunch hosted by Suvendu Adhikari at Banga Bhavan in Delhi, including the three MPs who were absent from the NDA gathering. The event was also attended by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who have been associated with efforts surrounding the rebellion.
The political uncertainty has been further fuelled by comments from senior TMC leader Saugata Roy, who claimed that some rebel MPs have been in contact with him and are exploring possibilities of returning to the party. The statement has added another layer to the ongoing speculation over whether all 20 MPs remain committed to their decision to leave the TMC.

Meanwhile, the formal recognition of the MPs’ merger with the NCPI remains pending. The Lok Sabha records continue to show them as TMC members, and during parliamentary proceedings, their party affiliation has reportedly appeared as Trinamool on official broadcasts. However, they have been seated separately from the TMC MPs in the House while the matter awaits a decision from the Speaker.
Sources indicated that technical and procedural issues may be delaying official recognition of the merger. TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has already approached the Lok Sabha Speaker, seeking disqualification proceedings against all 20 MPs under anti-defection provisions.
The issue is expected to become clearer following further discussions between political leaders and parliamentary authorities. Suvendu Adhikari also met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at Parliament House, with the future status of the rebel MPs likely to depend on the Speaker’s decision and the political calculations of both the TMC and BJP-led NDA.
