Indian Kiosk Worker Stabbed 15 Times in Utah Mall Hate Crime
Utah man charged with attempted murder after stabbing Indian Muslim mall worker.
An Indian-origin man was critically injured after being stabbed in an alleged hate crime at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, on Monday. Authorities have arrested 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen, who has been charged with attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. According to court documents, investigators allege Larsen admitted he deliberately targeted the victim because of his religion and told police he "intends to kill Muslims." He is currently being held at the Salt Lake County Jail as the investigation continues.
According to investigators, the suspect approached the victim, identified by friends as Sohail, who was working at a kiosk inside the shopping mall. Witnesses said Larsen began a conversation by asking Sohail where he was from and whether he was Muslim. After Sohail identified himself as an Indian Muslim, the suspect allegedly launched a knife attack. Religious leaders familiar with the case said Larsen had also asked the victim for a bottle of water before allegedly pulling out a knife and attacking him as he turned away.
Witnesses described the attack as sudden and extremely violent. A fundraiser organised by friends claims Sohail was stabbed 15 times and has undergone multiple surgeries. He remains in critical condition. Before police arrived, several bystanders intervened, tackled Larsen and restrained him, preventing the assault from continuing. Authorities later took Larsen into custody after he received treatment for injuries sustained while being restrained by members of the public.

Investigators have described Larsen as posing a significant danger to the public, citing his alleged violent actions, extremist views and references to planned mass casualty attacks contained in court documents. The case is being investigated as authorities examine the motive behind the assault and review evidence collected from the scene. Police have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
Friends and colleagues described Sohail as a dedicated worker and the sole earning member of his family. According to those close to him, he supports his wife and two young children, and his family is now facing significant financial hardship due to his medical condition. His manager condemned the attack, calling it a senseless act of hatred, while expressing hope for Sohail's recovery and praising his commitment and work ethic.
The incident has renewed concerns over hate-motivated violence in the United States. Civil rights organisations have repeatedly warned of a rise in anti-Muslim incidents in recent years, attributing the trend to factors including anti-immigration rhetoric, extremist ideologies and heightened tensions linked to international conflicts. The attack has prompted fresh calls for stronger action against hate crimes and greater efforts to protect vulnerable communities from targeted violence.
