India Fiji Boost Parliamentary Ties in High-Level Meeting
India's High Commissioner to Fiji meets Parliament Speaker to strengthen bilateral and parliamentary cooperation.
India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, held a high-level meeting with Fiji Parliament Speaker Filimone Jitoko on Monday, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and parliamentary ties. The discussions underscored shared commitments to strengthen governance, trade, and development partnerships between the two nations.
Following the meeting, the Indian High Commission tweeted that the talks were “productive” and reaffirmed strong parliamentary ties, highlighting avenues to advance cooperation across multiple sectors. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue in bolstering diplomatic and people-to-people relations.
Earlier this month, on January 27, High Commissioner Mehta chaired the second meeting of the Project Steering Committee to review the Quick Impact Project (QIP) – the “Tubalevu Ground Water Supply Project.” The project, backed by India, aims to provide essential water supply to the residents of Tubalevu, demonstrating India’s ongoing development support in Fiji.

On January 19, Mehta also called on Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, where discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, finance, and economic development. Both sides expressed optimism about expanding collaborative initiatives in the near future.
India-Fiji relations are rooted in mutual respect, strong cultural bonds, and people-to-people connections. The relationship received a significant boost after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in November 2014, which marked the first Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) meeting and laid the foundation for long-term strategic collaboration.
Over the years, India has actively supported Fiji’s nation-building efforts through capacity-building programs, infrastructure development, and sector-specific aid. The recent engagements between High Commissioner Mehta and Fijian leadership signal a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation across governance, infrastructure, and social development initiatives.
