India Announces 12 Iconic Locations For International Day Of Yoga 2026 Events

India selects major sites for nationwide Yoga Day celebrations.

India is set to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21 with large-scale celebrations across the country, highlighting yoga’s global reach and its origins in ancient Indian tradition. The main national event will be held in Kolkata, West Bengal, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the observance. The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focusing on the role of yoga in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being across all age groups.

The International Day of Yoga was first proposed by India at the United Nations in 2014 and received overwhelming global support, leading to June 21 being officially designated for the annual observance. Since then, Yoga Day has grown into a worldwide movement, with millions participating in coordinated events across countries. In India, it has evolved into a large-scale public initiative involving government institutions, cultural organisations, and local communities.

As part of this year’s programme, the Ministry of Ayush has identified 12 iconic heritage and cultural sites across the country to host synchronised yoga sessions. These locations include the Red Fort in Delhi, Gateway of India in Mumbai, Charminar precincts in Hyderabad, Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, Hampi in Karnataka, and Mahabalipuram’s Shore Temple in Tamil Nadu, among others. The initiative aims to blend India’s historical heritage with its traditional wellness practices.

Other selected sites include Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Nalanda Mahavihara in Bihar, Leh Palace in Ladakh, Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat, and Kanchari Fort in Assam. Officials said each of these locations represents a unique aspect of India’s cultural, spiritual, or architectural legacy, making them symbolic venues for the nationwide celebration.

Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said the selected monuments reflect India’s diverse historical journey and enduring traditions. He added that yoga continues to connect physical vitality with mental resilience and has become a unifying practice that links India’s ancient wisdom with modern aspirations for healthier living.

On June 21, participants across these 12 locations will perform the Common Yoga Protocol simultaneously with the main event in Kolkata, creating a coordinated national observance. Officials said the initiative aims to showcase yoga as a bridge between heritage and contemporary wellness practices, reinforcing its role as a global symbol of India’s cultural diplomacy and public health outreach.
