IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai As Waterlogging Disrupts Daily Commute

Mumbai's heavy rains revive demand for flexible work arrangements

Heavy monsoon showers disrupted normal life across Mumbai on Wednesday, prompting renewed calls from employees for work-from-home and hybrid work arrangements. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Mumbai under a red alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. The downpour led to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and delays in public transport, making daily commutes difficult for thousands of office-goers across the city.

The IMD has also extended an orange alert for Mumbai and nearby regions until July 4, warning of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Weather officials have cautioned about potential landslide risks in parts of the Central Maharashtra ghats as the southwest monsoon continues to intensify. The adverse weather has once again affected road and rail transportation, leaving commuters facing longer travel times and uncertainty during peak office hours.

The latest spell of rain has reignited discussions over flexible workplace policies, with many professionals urging employers to adopt hybrid or remote working arrangements during periods of severe weather. Employees said that journeys which usually take about an hour are now taking nearly twice as long due to waterlogged roads, traffic bottlenecks and disruptions to public transport. Some workers also pointed to delays in suburban train services and the limited availability of auto-rickshaws, making daily commuting increasingly stressful during the monsoon season.

The debate is similar to discussions held during the severe rainfall in August 2025, when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) temporarily closed government and semi-government offices under a red alert and advised private organisations to consider allowing employees to work remotely. Many professionals believe a flexible work policy during periods of extreme rainfall would improve employee safety, reduce commuting stress and help maintain productivity while the city continues to face recurring monsoon-related disruptions.
