Hindutva Influencer Claims Self-Defence After Striking Activist's Father At Delhi Protest

Hindutva influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj, who has come under fire over his alleged claim that he "cracked" a person's skull during a protest at Jantar Mantar in July, has said he acted in "self-defence" during the incident, adding that he "would do it again if cornered." Speaking in a recent interview, Bhardwaj claimed that he struck the protester's father with his kada, a traditional iron bracelet, while defending himself during the confrontation, a version of events that has done little to quell the political and public backlash surrounding the incident. The controversy erupted after a podcast clip featuring Bhardwaj went viral, in which he could reportedly be heard claiming to have attacked Sanjay Azad, the father of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activist Nishu Azad, during protests connected to the NEET-UG examination controversy in Delhi.

In the clip, Bhardwaj also purportedly suggested that he had avoided facing legal consequences for the incident after receiving a call from a leader affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, a claim that has intensified scrutiny of how the case was originally handled by Delhi Police and raised questions about potential political interference in the matter. Nishu Azad has publicly alleged that her father sustained a serious head injury during the assault and has accused Delhi Police of failing to take appropriate action against Bhardwaj, including not registering a First Information Report in connection with the incident despite the passage of several months.

She shared a video on social media platform X appealing to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for assistance, stating that individuals like Bhardwaj continue to move freely without fear of legal consequences and should instead be held accountable and imprisoned for their actions. Her appeal underscored a broader frustration with what she described as inaction on the part of law enforcement despite what she characterized as a public admission of guilt. The controversy has since escalated into a broader protest movement, with CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka gathering outside the Parliament Street Police Station to demand strict action against Bhardwaj.

Ranka called for serious criminal charges to be filed, stating that Sanjay Azad had been assaulted during the Jantar Mantar protest and that the family had been seeking justice ever since. He further alleged that Delhi Police had failed to act "at the behest of the BJP" and said the group would push for a case as serious as attempted murder to be registered against Bhardwaj. Das echoed similar concerns, criticizing what he described as the open movement of individuals implicated in violent incidents and alleging that threats had also been directed at Nishu Azad herself, including reports of rape threats and abuse from Bhardwaj's supporters online. Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) MP Chandrashekhar Azad also joined the protest in support of the family, lending further political weight to the demonstration.

According to reports, Delhi Police have since assured Nishu Azad that action would be taken against Bhardwaj within 72 hours. Her legal counsel said police had indicated a possible arrest within that timeframe and confirmed that a list of social media accounts responsible for online abuse and threats directed at Nishu had been submitted to authorities, with a separate FIR sought specifically addressing the online harassment she says she has faced since the controversy went public. The protesters have also criticized what they view as a broader pattern of leniency shown by Delhi Police toward individuals with alleged political connections, a criticism that has become a recurring theme in the demonstrations outside the police station.

For his part, Bhardwaj has rejected the circulating video as "fake" while simultaneously defending his actions as self-defence in his interview remarks, a position that appears to acknowledge some version of the confrontation even as he disputes the framing and authenticity of the viral clip itself. The apparent contradiction between his denial of the video's authenticity and his own account of acting in self-defence has added further controversy to the case, which continues to draw significant political attention and public scrutiny over both the original incident and the broader question of how such cases involving politically connected individuals are handled by law enforcement in the capital.
