High-Tension Power Line Snaps, Scooter Catches Fire; Five Injured In Noida

Power line snaps, scooter fire leaves five injured.

Five people were injured after being electrocuted and a scooter caught fire when an 11 KV high-tension power line snapped and fell onto a road in Chhijarsi under the Sector 63 police station area of Noida on Wednesday evening. The incident triggered panic among commuters and residents, prompting an immediate rescue operation by the police and local people.

According to Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Swatantra Kumar Singh, police teams from Sector 63 reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Rescue and relief operations were launched with the assistance of local residents, who helped move the injured away from the live power line and ensured they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A preliminary investigation found that an 11 KV electricity line suddenly snapped and fell on the road, coming into contact with people passing through the area. The live wire allegedly electrocuted several pedestrians and commuters, while a scooter that came in contact with the fallen line caught fire. The blaze caused by the electrical short circuit was brought under control, preventing further damage in the area.

The injured have been identified as Nidhi (15), Priya (17), Mukesh Ram (38), Pavitra (41) and Ravi Chaudhary. All five victims were admitted to a hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Police did not immediately provide details about the severity of their injuries, but officials said medical care was being provided to all those affected.

Following the incident, local residents accused the electricity department of failing to properly maintain overhead power lines, alleging that poor upkeep may have contributed to the accident. They demanded regular inspections and timely repairs of electrical infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future. Officials have not yet responded to the allegations.

Police said the exact cause of the power line snapping is being investigated, and authorities are expected to coordinate with the electricity department to determine whether technical faults, ageing infrastructure or other factors were responsible. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over public safety around overhead high-voltage power lines, particularly in densely populated urban areas where equipment failures can pose serious risks to commuters and residents.
