Heavy Rain Lashes Delhi-NCR, Red Alert Issued Ahead Of BRICS Summit
Heavy rain and red alert precede BRICS Summit in Delhi.
Several parts of Delhi received rain on Friday as the national capital braced for more showers, thunderstorms and lightning ahead of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further spells of rain over the coming hours and issued a red alert for Delhi, with the weather expected to remain unsettled during the two-day summit beginning September 12.
The IMD had forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in northern parts of Delhi, while moderate to heavy showers were expected in several other areas. The latest spell of rain comes a day before leaders and delegations from BRICS member countries are scheduled to arrive for the summit, which will be held in the national capital on September 12 and 13.
For Saturday, September 12, the weather department has forecast one or two spells of very light to light rain at several places from early morning to the forenoon, along with thunderstorms and lightning. Another spell of light to moderate rainfall is likely from the evening through the night, potentially bringing intermittent wet conditions across the capital as summit-related events take place.

The rainfall is also expected to provide some relief from the prevailing heat. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the maximum temperature is forecast to remain below 33 degrees Celsius from Saturday. Meteorologists attributed the changing weather conditions to the movement of the monsoon axis over the region and said easterly winds were likely to become dominant from Friday.
The conditions could bring intermittent spells of moderate rain to parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Rajasthan over the weekend. However, meteorologists said the rainfall is likely to remain largely localised, with around 30-40 per cent coverage, meaning several areas across the plains could continue to remain dry.
The weather forecast assumes added significance as New Delhi hosts the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, with major events scheduled at Bharat Mandapam. Saturday’s programme includes a closed-door leaders’ session, the Bharat Innovates Exhibition, a family photograph, a tree-planting ceremony and a gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The main open session is scheduled for Sunday, followed by the release of the New Delhi Declaration.
