Google Reportedly Starts Rolling Out New Android Backup Storage Policy

Google has reportedly started rolling out a new Android backup storage policy that will change how device backup data is counted against users’ Google Account storage limits. The company is expected to notify users around 45 days before the update takes effect, giving them time to review their storage usage and make necessary adjustments.

Under the revised policy, Android backup data that was previously excluded from storage calculations will begin using available Google Account storage space. The change will affect information such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, app settings and other backup-related data stored through Android’s backup system.

According to reports, Google’s notification emails will explain the impact of the policy change and provide estimates of how much additional storage individual users’ existing Android backups may require. In one example, the increase was reported to be around 30MB, while earlier estimates suggested that average backup sizes could rise by approximately 40MB, indicating that the additional storage requirement may remain limited for most users.

The updated policy will also affect automatic backups for accounts that exceed their storage limits. Once an account reaches its available storage capacity, Android devices will reportedly stop creating new automatic backups until users clear space or upgrade to a larger Google storage plan.

Google is also introducing expanded backup management options for devices running Android 9 and later versions. Users will reportedly be able to select which apps and categories of data are included in future backups, allowing greater control over what information is stored and restored when moving to another device.

Users will be able to monitor Android backup storage through the Google One storage manager, where they can review usage, remove unnecessary data, purchase additional cloud storage or disable backups if needed. The update is expected to give users more control over their backup preferences while bringing Android backups under Google Account storage management.
