Fresh Snowfall Set to Hit Kashmir from February 1

Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness fresh snowfall from February 1 to February 2 as a western disturbance approaches the region, officials said on Friday. The system is expected to bring light rain and snow to the plains, with moderate to heavy snowfall in higher altitude areas.

Earlier spells of snowfall on January 23 and January 27 had already ended a month-long dry spell, providing relief to farmers, but heavy accumulation in rural and remote areas caused disruptions to daily life. Dry weather with cloudy conditions is expected to continue until January 31 before the next system arrives.

Authorities have issued safety advisories urging travelers commuting to and from Srinagar to avoid unnecessary journeys and to check road and highway conditions with traffic authorities before setting out. A high-danger avalanche alert remains in force in at least six districts following a recent avalanche in Sonamarg.

Rescue and relief operations have been ongoing, particularly in snowbound rural areas. Health department ambulance services have evacuated elderly residents, lactating mothers, and expectant mothers to nearby health facilities to ensure their safety.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah personally monitored rescue operations and restoration of essential services such as power supply and water. His government received praise from party colleagues, including senior leader Ali Mohammad Sagar, and local residents for the effective response during recent snowfall emergencies.

Authorities have emphasized preparedness and vigilance as snowfall is expected to intensify in higher reaches. Citizens have been advised to stay updated on weather alerts and follow instructions from police and disaster management authorities to avoid accidents and ensure safety.
