Five Dead, Two Injured After Explosion At Aerospace Plant In South Korea

Explosion at South Korean aerospace plant kills five workers.

An explosion at a facility operated by South Korean defence manufacturer Hanwha Aerospace has killed five people and injured two others, according to local fire authorities, in a serious industrial accident that has triggered a major emergency response. The blast occurred on Monday morning at around 11:00 am local time (0200 GMT) at the company’s plant in Daejeon, located approximately 150 kilometres south of Seoul.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site after reports of a powerful explosion inside the facility. A representative of the Daejeon Fire Headquarters confirmed that five people had died in the incident, while two others sustained injuries. Officials have not yet released detailed information on the condition of the injured or the exact cause of the explosion, as investigations are ongoing.

Authorities, as cited by Yonhap news agency, believe the explosion originated inside the factory premises, although the precise circumstances remain unclear. Fire crews continued efforts to extinguish the blaze hours after the incident, with officials noting that the fire had not been fully brought under control at the time of reporting.

Hanwha Aerospace, one of South Korea’s leading defence companies, is known for producing artillery systems, weapons platforms, and aerospace components. The Daejeon facility where the explosion occurred is primarily engaged in research and development activities, including advanced weapons technology and space-related systems.

A company representative stated that the firm is cooperating fully with authorities but emphasised that the exact extent of the damage and cause of the incident has yet to be determined. The explosion has prompted heightened scrutiny given the sensitive nature of the site’s defence-related work.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung directed officials to mobilise all available resources to contain the fire and manage the aftermath of the incident, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the cause of the explosion, while emergency teams remain deployed at the site to ensure safety and prevent any further risks.
