Ex-UP DGP, Five Others Booked After Retired Teacher's Death in Lalitpur

Former UP DGP booked after retired teacher's death in Lalitpur.

A retired Director General of Police (DGP)-rank officer of the Uttar Pradesh Police and five others have been booked on charges of abetment of suicide following the death of a 78-year-old retired government schoolteacher in Lalitpur district. The case was registered after Rajaram Goswami allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at his residence in Buragaon Chiglaua village on Thursday. Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations made in handwritten notes reportedly left behind by the deceased.

According to police, Rajaram Goswami was facing trial in a case registered against him under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Investigators said the retired teacher allegedly consumed poison at his home and later succumbed. Following the incident, officials recovered handwritten notes that reportedly named several individuals, including retired DGP-rank officer L.V. Antony Dev Kumar, accusing them of prolonged harassment.

Based on a complaint and the contents of the notes, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the retired police officer and five others under provisions related to abetment of suicide. Investigators are examining the allegations and verifying the circumstances that may have led to the death. Authorities have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains at a preliminary stage.

Police officials said the handwritten notes would form an important part of the investigation, although they would be corroborated with other evidence before any conclusions are drawn. Forensic examination of the notes and other material recovered from the scene is expected to assist investigators in establishing the sequence of events. Statements from family members, witnesses and other individuals connected to the case are also likely to be recorded.

The incident has drawn attention because of the involvement of a former senior police officer and the serious nature of the allegations contained in the suicide notes. Officials have emphasised that the registration of an FIR marks the beginning of the legal process and that all allegations will be examined in accordance with the law. The accused will have the opportunity to present their version during the course of the investigation.

Police said further action would depend on the evidence collected during the inquiry and the findings of the investigation. The death of the retired teacher has sparked concern in the local community, while authorities have assured that the case will be investigated thoroughly and impartially. Additional details are expected to emerge as investigators continue examining the evidence and questioning those connected to the matter.
