EU Urges Independent Investigation Into Death Of Polish Activist In Ecuador

EU calls for transparent investigation into activist’s death abroad.

The European Union delegation to Ecuador has called for a swift, independent, and transparent investigation into the death of Polish anti-corruption activist Monika Silva Koniuszek, who was found dead at her residence in the coastal village of Montañita on June 8, 2026. Authorities have indicated the possibility of suicide, but the case has triggered concern among her supporters and international observers.

Koniuszek, also known locally as Monika Silva, was a long-time resident of Ecuador and a prominent anti-corruption advocate. She served as president of the La Integridad Foundation, an organisation focused on promoting transparency, civic participation, and accountability, particularly in Santa Elena province, where she had been active for several years.

Her work reportedly included exposing alleged land trafficking networks, corruption within public administration, and environmental disputes in the region. Friends and associates have claimed that she had received threats related to her activism, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her death. According to a close associate, she had previously expressed fears that criminal groups may have been targeting her.

The European Union delegation expressed “deep concern” over the incident and urged Ecuadorian authorities to ensure a comprehensive investigation. In its statement, the delegation emphasised the need for a process that is swift, thorough, independent, and transparent in order to clarify the circumstances and ensure accountability.

Supporters of the activist have also voiced skepticism over the initial assessment of suicide. Reports from vigils held in her honour, including outside the Ecuadorian embassy in Warsaw, suggest that many believe further investigation is necessary to rule out foul play and establish the truth behind her death.

Koniuszek’s death has intensified scrutiny of risks faced by anti-corruption and environmental activists operating in parts of Latin America, where advocacy work often intersects with organised crime and political sensitivities. The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to examine evidence and circumstances surrounding her final days.
