Ebola Bundibugyo Outbreak: WHO Says Vaccines and Treatments Must Only be Tested in Trials

WHO urges clinical trials only for Bundibugyo Ebola treatments as Congo and Uganda face an outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that experimental vaccines and treatments for Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus should only be administered within clinical trials as health authorities respond to the latest outbreak in Central Africa.

The advisory comes amid an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with additional cases reported in neighboring Uganda. The WHO said it is working closely with affected countries and international health agencies to assess the safety and effectiveness of potential treatments and vaccines.

According to the global health body, there are currently no approved vaccines or therapies specifically designed for Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola that has triggered concern among health experts. However, specialists have identified several promising candidates suitable for priority testing during controlled clinical studies.

The WHO has convened expert groups to evaluate available countermeasures and determine the most effective response strategy. The agency stressed that any use of experimental products must follow strict ethical and scientific standards.

The organization added that it is coordinating with authorities in Congo and Uganda, along with partners including the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), to design and implement clinical trials during the outbreak response.

Health officials continue to monitor the spread of the virus closely as efforts intensify to contain infections and strengthen regional preparedness against further transmission.
