A 38-year-old diver was killed after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing off Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination near Australia’s southwest coast, police said on Saturday. According to Western Australia Police, the man was spearfishing with a friend on a coral reef when the incident occurred. Authorities said the diver was near a dive boat at the time of the attack and sustained severe injuries after being bitten on the legs.
Police Sergeant Michael Wear stated that the victim was quickly pulled from the water and transported by boat approximately one kilometre back to Rottnest Island in an attempt to reach medical assistance. However, emergency responders and paramedics were unable to revive him upon arrival.Lifeguards reported that a large shark, believed to be a white shark measuring around five metres (approximately 16 feet), had been seen in the area shortly before the attack. The presence of the predator in the vicinity has raised renewed concern among authorities and the diving community.
The incident has been confirmed as the first fatal shark attack in Australia since January, when a 12-year-old boy died after being mauled by a bull shark in Sydney Harbour. Officials noted that Rottnest Island last recorded a fatal shark attack in 2011, when a 32-year-old diver was killed while underwater.Australia has long recorded shark encounters due to its extensive coastline and popularity of water-based recreational activities such as surfing, diving, and spearfishing.

On average, the country experiences more than three fatal shark attacks annually in recent decades, according to historical data cited by authorities. Local officials have urged water users to remain cautious and adhere to safety advisories while marine patrols and monitoring systems continue to assess shark activity in the region following the latest incident.
