Dilip Ghosh Says TMC Cannot Win Falta, Cites Voter Suppression Allegations

Dilip Ghosh reacts to Falta repoll order, claims TMC has no chance of victory.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the political situation in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency, asserting that the ruling party has “no possibility of winning” and alleging that recent developments are aimed at boosting the morale of its cadre ahead of repolling.

Reacting to the Election Commission’s decision to order a complete repoll in Falta, Ghosh told IANS that the TMC is attempting to create a psychological advantage among its supporters despite what he described as declining public support. He claimed that the situation on the ground reflects voter dissatisfaction and that opposition voices are being increasingly heard in the region.

Ghosh further alleged that voters in the constituency have historically faced intimidation and suppression during elections. He claimed that in previous years, people were prevented from voting freely and that voter identity cards were allegedly taken away in certain instances. He also alleged that residents are now coming forward to protest against what he described as ongoing attempts to deny them their democratic rights.

The controversy comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered a full repoll across all 285 polling stations in the Falta Assembly constituency. The decision followed reports of “severe electoral offences” and what the Commission described as a “subversion of the democratic process” during the second phase of polling held on April 29. The move marks one of the more significant interventions by the poll body in the ongoing electoral cycle.

According to the ECI schedule, repolling in Falta, including auxiliary polling stations, will be conducted on May 21 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. The counting of votes for the constituency has been separated from the rest of the state and is scheduled for May 24. In contrast, counting for other constituencies from the two-phase elections held on April 23 and April 29 will take place on May 4.

In addition to Falta, the Election Commission has also ordered repolling at 15 booths across the Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim constituencies. These booths were invalidated based on reports submitted by Returning Officers and election observers. The developments have further heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with parties exchanging allegations as the state prepares for repolling and the upcoming counting process.
