Delhi Power Minister Pushes for CAG Audit of Discoms Over Thousands of Crores in Unpaid Dues
Delhi power minister seeks CAG audit probing thousands of crores in unexplained discom dues.
The Delhi government is pushing for a comprehensive audit of the capital’s power distribution companies (discoms) by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, according to Power Minister Ashish Sood. The move is aimed at investigating the accumulation of dues worth several thousand crores over the years.
Ashish Sood said the proposed audit will examine how such massive unpaid dues were allowed to build up and whether there were systemic lapses in oversight. He referenced earlier observations by the Supreme Court of India, which had flagged concerns over recovery of pending payments and questioned how discoms continued to operate despite prolonged non-payment.
Raising serious concerns, Sood questioned whether there could have been any collusion between previous governments and the discoms that allowed the situation to persist. He emphasized that a CAG audit would bring transparency and accountability by scrutinising financial records and operational practices of these companies.

The proposed audit is expected to delve into the financial health of discoms, their revenue collection mechanisms, and the reasons behind the mounting dues. Officials believe that such an exercise could help identify inefficiencies, plug revenue leakages, and ensure better governance in the power sector.
If approved, the audit could have significant implications for Delhi’s electricity distribution system, potentially leading to policy reforms and stricter regulatory oversight aimed at preventing similar issues in the future.
