Senior Congress leaders gathered at Veer Bhumi on Thursday to pay homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, remembering him as a visionary leader who promoted technological progress and focused on youth development. Party leaders, including top Congress figures and workers, offered floral tributes and reflected on his political legacy and contributions to modern India.
Among those present were Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several senior party members including Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram, and Mukul Wasnik. Party workers also participated in large numbers, marking the anniversary with commemorative events and speeches highlighting Rajiv Gandhi’s role in shaping India’s political and technological trajectory.
Speaking to reporters, Congress leaders described Rajiv Gandhi as a leader with a forward-looking vision, particularly in areas such as education, youth empowerment, and technological modernisation. Some leaders recalled his emphasis on scientific thinking and administrative reforms, while others highlighted his role in introducing early steps toward India’s digital transformation. They said his leadership style was marked by a focus on modernisation and institution-building during a period of rapid change in India’s political landscape.

Several party figures also used the occasion to reflect on what they described as the continued relevance of Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals. Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said his vision for India remained significant and urged people to revisit his contributions. Other leaders, including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, noted that Rajiv Gandhi had strong expectations for India’s youth and had inspired a generation of political and administrative reforms during his tenure as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.
Congress leaders also referred to his broader legacy, including his role in expanding India’s telecommunications and computerisation efforts, which they described as early foundations of the country’s digital growth. Leaders such as Devender Yadav said his policies had provided a new direction and energy to governance and development during his time in office. Party members reiterated that his contributions continue to be remembered across the country.
Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40 following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, in 1984. He served until 1989 and was later assassinated in 1991 during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a suicide bomber linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. His death anniversary continues to be observed annually by the Congress party as a day of remembrance.
