Chandrababu Naidu Hails SCRZ Notification As Fulfilment Of Andhra’s Long Dream

Centre notifies South Coast Railway Zone with Visakhapatnam HQ, boosting North Andhra connectivity and development.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said that the creation of the South Coast Railway Zone marks the fulfilment of a “long-cherished dream” of the people of the state, following the Centre’s gazette notification announcing its formal establishment. He said the development represents a major step forward in strengthening rail infrastructure and regional connectivity.

Naidu stated that the Railway Ministry’s notification establishing the South Coast Railway Zone with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters is a historic milestone for Andhra Pradesh. He added that official operations of the new zone are scheduled to begin from June 1, 2026. According to him, the decision reflects years of persistent efforts by the state to secure improved railway administration and better connectivity for underserved regions.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the reorganisation of railway divisions, particularly the restructuring of the Waltair Division, will significantly transform transportation in North Andhra. He noted that the integration of key sections, including Palasa–Ichchapuram, into the Visakhapatnam Division will enhance operational efficiency and improve both passenger and freight movement across the region.

Naidu also said that coordination between the newly formed Visakhapatnam Division and the proposed Rayagada Division will further strengthen the railway network. He emphasised that this restructuring is expected to support industrial expansion, improve logistics, and accelerate economic development in North Andhra, which has long sought greater infrastructural investment.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the proposal and issuing the gazette notification. Naidu said the Centre’s decision reflects responsiveness to long-pending demands of the state and marks a positive step for balanced regional development.

State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu also welcomed the move, calling it a victory for the people of Uttarandhra (North Andhra). He said the NDA government’s coordinated efforts with the Centre helped realise a decades-old aspiration, despite earlier delays. He added that the inclusion of major sections like Duvvada–Vijayanagaram and Bobbili–Salur into the Visakhapatnam Division, along with plans for a permanent office in Arilova, will further boost regional growth and connectivity.
