Car Rams Berlin Pride Crowd, Killing One and Injuring 16

One person was killed and at least 16 others were injured after a vehicle drove into crowds attending Berlin's Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations on Saturday night. The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. local time as the annual LGBTQ+ event was drawing to a close, prompting authorities to launch a major investigation and organisers to cancel the remaining festivities.

According to police, a white van left the roadway and drove onto a pedestrian path in Berlin's Tiergarten park, striking multiple people. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where several victims were reported to be critically injured. Police later said they had identified a suspect who was reportedly linked to Islamist circles, while stressing that the investigation remains ongoing.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was briefed on the incident soon after it occurred, and the federal government said national security agencies were prepared to assist Berlin authorities with the investigation. In a statement, the government described the incident as a "heinous act" of violence, with Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt pledging to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Security had already been heightened throughout the Pride parade, with a significant police presence and protective vehicle barriers installed along the route to prevent potential vehicle attacks. Hundreds of thousands of participants had taken part in the march through Tiergarten towards the Brandenburg Gate, where a closing rally featuring German singer Sarah Connor had been scheduled before the attack disrupted the event.

Following the collision, emergency vehicles and police units flooded the city centre while helicopters monitored the area from above. Berlin Police appealed to members of the public to submit photographs, videos and other information that could assist investigators in reconstructing the events leading up to the attack and identifying any additional evidence.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the incident, calling it an attack on the city's values of freedom, diversity and tolerance. Christopher Street Day commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York, a landmark event in the global LGBTQ+ rights movement. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack while victims receive treatment and officials assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
