Brydon Carse Nightclub Saga Takes Fresh Turn As Derbyshire Police Probe Alleged Assault

The controversy surrounding England fast bowler Brydon Carse's nightclub incident has taken a fresh turn, with Derbyshire Police confirming that they are investigating allegations of assault linked to an incident in Derby city centre. The development comes days after footage emerged showing Carse being handcuffed by police outside a nightclub, prompting a separate investigation by the Cricket Regulator and his removal from England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan.

Carse was initially arrested in the early hours of Sunday on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. Police later "de-arrested" him after he agreed to leave the area. Derbyshire Police have now confirmed that they are investigating allegations of assault in the city centre, but said no arrests had been made in connection with that investigation.

Importantly, police have not established whether Carse was directly involved in the alleged assault. The incident occurred after Carse and other Durham players had been celebrating their County Championship victory over Derbyshire. A video circulating on social media showed the England bowler in handcuffs outside a Derby nightclub.

Former England captain Ben Stokes and England seamer Matthew Potts were also seen in footage from the aftermath, although there has been no suggestion from police that either player was involved in the alleged assault. The England and Wales Cricket Board had already referred the nightclub incident to the independent Cricket Regulator, which launched its own investigation.

Carse was subsequently withdrawn from England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, with Sonny Baker named as his replacement. The ECB said Carse would remain unavailable for selection while the investigation was ongoing and the full facts were being established. The latest police investigation adds another layer to an incident that has already generated considerable scrutiny around the England team. Test captain Joe Root expressed frustration over the episode and said the repeated off-field controversies involving England players were becoming a distraction from their performances on the field.

Root said he had spoken to Carse and that the fast bowler was upset, apologetic and understood his actions. Carse's absence is particularly notable because he remains an important part of England's bowling plans. He was the team's leading wicket-taker during the Ashes tour but was released to play for Durham after being left out of England's previous Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

Carse's removal from the second-Test squad therefore comes at a time when England are also dealing with broader concerns about player conduct away from the game. For now, the police investigation is at an early stage. Derbyshire Police have said no arrests have been made over the alleged assault, and there is no confirmed indication of Carse's involvement in that specific allegation.

The separate Cricket Regulator investigation will also determine whether any disciplinary action is warranted in relation to the nightclub incident. Until those inquiries establish the facts, conclusions about Carse's role in any alleged assault would be premature. The latest development means Carse faces scrutiny from both law enforcement and cricket authorities, although the two investigations concern separate aspects of the incident.

Police are examining the alleged assault in Derby city centre, while the Cricket Regulator is investigating the circumstances surrounding the broader nightclub episode. With both inquiries continuing, Carse's return to England duty remains uncertain.
