Breakfast Meetings Fuel Leadership Speculation Within Karnataka Congress Circles
Breakfast meetings intensified Karnataka Congress leadership speculation and political chatter.
Fresh political developments in Karnataka have once again brought the Congress leadership tussle into focus, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inviting his deputy D. K. Shivakumar for a breakfast meeting amid growing speculation over a possible leadership transition in the state. The meeting, scheduled for Thursday morning at Siddaramaiah’s official residence “Kaveri” in Bengaluru, comes at a politically sensitive moment for the ruling Congress government.
According to revised travel details, Shivakumar is expected to fly from New Delhi and arrive in Bengaluru at around 8:30 am before heading directly to the Chief Minister’s residence for breakfast. The menu — idli, vada, sambhar and chutney — has unexpectedly become symbolic of a high-stakes political negotiation that could shape Karnataka’s leadership in the coming weeks. The public announcement of the meeting has further fuelled speculation regarding internal discussions within the party.
The breakfast diplomacy between the two senior leaders is not new. In December, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar held two similar breakfast meetings within a span of four days after instructions from the Congress high command to display unity and resolve differences internally. However, those meetings did little to fully settle the long-running power-sharing speculation that has persisted since the Congress formed the government in Karnataka in 2023.

The latest developments have gathered momentum with Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Surjewala also travelling to Bengaluru. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara told reporters that discussions between senior Congress leaders and the Chief Minister had taken place in Delhi, although details of those conversations remain unclear. He said Surjewala’s visit could help clarify the situation surrounding the party’s internal deliberations.
Speculation regarding a possible leadership change intensified after reports suggested that Siddaramaiah may communicate a key decision to party colleagues following the breakfast meeting. Political observers have linked the developments to the alleged rotational chief minister arrangement that has frequently been discussed within Congress circles, although the party has never officially confirmed such an agreement publicly.
The political tension also follows a series of separate meetings held by the two leaders in Delhi over the past two days. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar travelled to the national capital independently on Monday night. The following morning, Siddaramaiah was seen having breakfast at Karnataka Bhavan with several party leaders, though Shivakumar was notably absent despite having arrived in Delhi the previous evening. The latest breakfast meeting in Bengaluru is now being closely watched for signals on the future leadership direction of the Karnataka Congress government.
